Val Nelson’s artistic practice has encompassed dance performance, animation, video, film, drawing, and painting. An Honours graduate of Emily Carr College of Art and Design, her dance video collaborations have been screened at film festivals worldwide. In 2003, she was a finalist in the Royal Bank Painting Competition, and her paintings and drawings have been exhibited across Canada and collected internationally.
Val has received grants from BC Arts Council, a Knowledge Network Media Award, a Canada Council Travel Grant and Art Bank Purchase Award, among others, and has attended residencies at Vermont Studio Centre and Georgian College.
Her work has been published in Carte Blanche Volume II (Magenta Foundation), International Painting Annual 3 (Manifest Drawing and Research Centre), and Capilano University Press. Public institutions that have collected her work include Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Canada Council Art Bank, Surrey Art Gallery, and Vancouver General Hospital. Val has been represented by Bau-Xi Gallery (Vancouver/Toronto) and Galerie de Bellefeuille (Montreal), and has taught painting and drawing at the Shadbolt Arts Centre, Gordon Smith Gallery, Vancouver Island School of Art, and since 2009 in her private art studio. She currently lives and works in Vancouver, Canada.
